Avoiding getting fired! Urgent for a friend?

this kid i know works at a grocery store and he was in the "back" and milk spilled so he cleaned it up and he saw a big box of snickers and he thought about taking one, then he took it but then he realized it was wrong so five minutes back he put it back and one of the managers saw him and they told him to go to a meeting on wednesday. what should he tell them so he won't get fired like something that will really touch their hearts or something cuz he really needs to keep that job.
