Can my employer legally lay off the entire staff by just avoiding their phone calls? I had been an employee of the Comedy Connection, a very large comedy night club in Boston, for over a year. Our manager gave all the employees one week's notice that the current club would be closed and that there would be no work for some 3 weeks while they were renovating the new venue. She stated in front of all the employees that we would all still have jobs after that time and wanted all of us to return. Weeks went by, no one had heard from her, she would not return anyone's calls, and we could all see online that shows had already been scheduled for the new location. A few of the employees and I went down to the new location to try and talk with her in person but she refused to come out and see us or let us inside. The former head of marketing got inside and told her that "There are people downstairs who deserve some sort of answer as to weather or not they have jobs. Just tell them yes or no." But she would not answer. How childish! I feel this must violate some aspect of worker's rights! She never actually told anyone they were fired, she has just avoided everyone. Is there anything that could be done to compensate the staff or at least punish the owner and manager?
The main point once again is that no one has been fired. She is just ignoring everyone. I would understand your answers of "it's cut throat and they don't need to give you any notice" if she actually told us we were all fired. But as far as we know we all still work there. No one has told us otherwise. |
