Default Is is it right for a job to fire you because you have school?

Well I am a hostess at a restaurant and we had a hostess meeting saturday morning at 7:30 am and I had to leave at 8:10 to go play at an orchestra concert. So I got there and I told my manger I had to leave early and she told me that I had known about this meeting for two weeks now and I should of told them beforehand. Then she gave me the option of staying and missing my school event or leaving and losing my job. School always comes before my job so I left. But can you fire me for at least trying to be at the meeting for 40 min?

You really should have told them prior to the meeting that you had a school function. Maybe they could have arranged to go through the meeting topics with you at another time. School may come first to you, and should, but work will always come first to your employer.

Well yes they can. You are expected to conform to their schedule not the other way around. If you knew about the meeting then you should have told them the responsibility falls squarely on your shoulders.

Yes, they can fire you. You knew about the concert far enough in advance, probably before the meeting was even scheduled.
You should have said something the second you knew the two would conflict.
You weren't fired because of school, you were fired because you were an inconsiderate, uncaring, unthinking, irresponsible child.

They can fire you for anything except race, gender, creed, age, etc. I guess the fact that you had two weeks to speak of what was happening and didn't do it they took as a fairly serious communication problem. From the situation, you seem young and you may not have a lot of work experience, so I think I'd have been easier on you, but consider this an important lesson.

people need to remember that there are rules and conditions of employment.
If you get special treatment, all the other workers will see that, and will demand that the boss let them leave early or come in late too, and it willl be a big mess.

Workers notice these things. Hell, where I work, a worker actually measured everyone's work area and his work area was slightly smaller than everyone else's and he demanded that his work area be increased cuz it's not fair. LOL

Your boss isn't picking on you, they need to lay down rules and make people abide by it.

Yes. Learn from this and next time be more responsible and considerate and professional. You have no excuse, as she said, you knew for two weeks.

i always wondered about that too. if they fire u because they dont like the fact u have school, then u have somethin to say. i always wanted to know what if somethin comes up at the last minute before a meeting or whatever it is? u were fired because u told them at the last minute for a concert at your school.

i am also learning from this since i didnt get a job until i was 19. i had priorities at school and wasnt sure how a job works with that. ive gotten into a lot of conflict with the managers i stayed at the job for 6 months then left. id rather be my own boss and make my own time. true, school always comes 1st before a job. my job told me a job comes 1st than school.
