Can I get fired for showing up to work on Sunday with the possibility of

alcohol in my system? On Saturday night I went out with a few friends, and drank several drinks (many more then I should). I didn't drive home, and I didn't drive to work (my friend needed to borrow my car). I don't really have an excuse for drinking, and I am really ashamed of myself. Anyway, I guess I was acting goofy at work (even though I often do) and people kept asking me if I had had fun the night before. I never really answered them. I am just nervous that when I go back to work on Friday I will be terminated for clocking in to work intoxicated. Is that possible, or do they have to be able to prove that I was under the influence by giving me a breathalyzer or something?

If people knew you were under the influence while on the clock, yes you could get fired, or put on suspension at the very least. But if I was your boss, I'd fire you. Sorry.

I doubt that your boss would need a breathalyzer or urine test as grounds to fire you.
This could be a potentially more serious issue if your job involves working with the public, or if the job relates to safety (ie, bank teller, lifeguard, IT support).

It sounds like you've learned your lesson, or at least recognized that this is a problem that needs to be avoided in the future. My best advice to you is to lay low, work hard, and try not to catch anyone's eye for a while.

Oh, and no more overdrinking the night before work. But for now, just try to relax and don't torture yourself over something you can't solve at this very moment.

no. how could they? i showed up for work like that lots of times. its too late any way, they cant give you test for something that happened a few days ago. unless its a drug test.
