I have worked here for 6 years. The company has 2 call centers in Ca, both being moved out of state. My call center is closing first. I was told that if I live within 50 miles of the other call center, I will be transferred there, until that center is closed, then I can expect my severance. I plan on going to the other center, however, I was informed that they may not be able to work with my schedule, Sun/Mon off. I need these days off for personal reasons. If the company cannot accomodate my Sun/Mon days off, can I collect my severance/unemployment with the close of my call center? Or if I am offered a job (at the new call center), but with different days off, am I required to take the job? Will I be refused unemployment if I don't want to change my days off? This is a stressful time for me and any help you can provide is appreciated. Thanks!

well, sounds like they are going to lay you off anyways so ask them to do so quickly so you can get your severance and start your UI. However, I suggest you still look for a job because unfortunately, CA is pathetic when it comes to UI. I got laid off in MA and received the full $2000 a month (maximum) my friend got laid off in LA and she received $167 a week. She was making more than me during reg employment

if you don't accept the hours at the new place, they have the right to fire you--which means no severence.

You can file unemployment. Be prepared to give them a lot of background information and they will also need to do a phone interview with you. I would also start looking for a job now since unemployment pays a percentage of your regular pay. You can find more info on: http://www.edd.ca.gov/fleclaim.htm

You are in a tight bind and I feel for you however, you do have some good advice here from the community. I would take note that if they offer you a position and you refuse, you might be putting your unemployment package in jeopardy. Most of the time, they don't care if you have personal issues on certain days. When my daughter was working. she requested Sunday's off so she could attend church. Her job accepted it for a while, but then started scheduling her on Sundays. She was able to get them to change the time until af ter 1:00 because they really needed her. Don't rest on your laurels though. Get back out in the frey and look for work. You want to stay active and you want to move from one position right into another one - not skip a beat - if you can. Consider some educational opportunities also that once you have completed a program, the job market will look better to you and you are qualified and the probability of layoffs are slim. I teach - I'm never without a job. They need teachers so badly!
