Default Can you get fired for mixing business with pleasure?

I had a little 'thing' with someone at work last year. She's now left for different reasons. A colleague recently said that i was lucky that a certain senior member of the board didn't find out about us or i would be in trouble! Theres nothing in the practice manual about fraternizing with staff so what, if anything, could be done to me even if someone senior doesn't like the fact that the relationship didn't work out? Whats it got to do with anyone else if it doesn't affect business? Surely it just between two people?!!!

i have alway kept my work and my home life seperate, i think everyone should to a point because it can cause problems, i dont think you can be fired for it, some work places do not allow it, others do, but its not like its affecting either one of you at work

It would have to have previously been clearly stated and the information freely available via a "Company code of conduct" type rule. This sort of thing varies from one company to another. Some allow it - some dont but they have to let you know either way,or nothing could be done.

Some offices do not allow it because they have been burnt by inter-office relationships gone bad. Imagine your girlfriend wants to break it off or cheats on you or you on her and when you find out, you have to still be working with her and sitting in on meetings etc. not fun. That's also the reason why married couples do not work in the same place unless its a family owned business and even then its not the best thing
